Cedar Fair L.P. bought out by Apollo Global Management

In a major announcement today, Cedar Fair has released that they've agreed to be purchased by Apollo Global Management. The $2.4 billion agreement will see Apollo assume all of Cedar Fair's debt, which leaves about $635 million as the premium price of the company. Apollo is a very large investment company, generally similar to Blackstone which just purchased the Busch Entertainment parks.

Cedar Fair's board has already approved the sale, though it is contingent on obtaining a 2/3 vote of the company's unit holders. If all goes as planned, the sale could close at the start of the 2nd quarter 2010, leaving Cedar Fair as a private company wholly owned by an affiliate of Apollo Global.

What does this mean for the parks? Too early to say. Apollo does have investments in entertainment companies such as Harrah's and AMC Movie Theaters, though this would be their first with amusement parks.

There are many variables that still need to play out for me to feel comfortable having a strong opinion on this. As of now, Cedar Fair certainly was struggling under it's current management in many areas, but strong as ever in others. The Paramount purchase mess really did create a debt load that was too much to sustain in these times, so something had to give.

If the sale goes though it will be some time before we see how much of Cedar Fair's current corporate mentality soldiers on, and that's the most important factor to me. Really, it could be fantastic news... or awful - as much as I hate to say it only time will tell on that one.

--------

The reason why I have posted this article is it hits home here for me (Reighard). Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, PA is owned by Cedar Fair L.P. company. Now, since Apollo bought Cedar Fair L.P. company the future of Dorney Park and the other 11 amusement parks owned by Cedar Fair L.P. is uncertain what will it bring under the new management of the new owners of the parks.

The video link provided talks about the future projects that is planned for 2010 season and the interview with Dick Kinzel CEO of Cedar Fair L.P. company.

First, if you have a lot of time and you want to know more about the purchase of Cedar Fair by Apollo, you can read their filings with the SEC - but it's a bazillion pages long so be warned.

On the flipside, the Sandusky Register has an article with a video up that's of a quite long conversation with Kinzel himself. Lots of items are covered, such as Kinzel staying at head of the company for a while still, headquarters staying in Sandusky, how the deal went down, and more. You can check out that video and article here.

This is my home park and seeing how it improved over the years, I'm quite uncertain what will Apollo do with the parks it now owns (including my home park: Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom).

Special thanks to NewsPlusNotes to provide more details of this buy out of Cedar Fair L.P. company and Apollo Global Management.

Roy E. Disney Passed Away, died aged 79

December 16, 2009, Disney Parks cast members worldwide are mourning the loss of Roy E. Disney. He was a Disney Legend who played an important role in many of our lives. Here are some of our favorite images of Roy over the years:

Roy Edward Disney, son of Disney Studios co-founder Roy O. Disney, and nephew of Walt Disney, passed away today (12/16/09) at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California, following a year-long battle with stomach cancer. He was 79 years old. Disney was a successful businessman, philanthropist, filmmaker, and award-winning sailor, who played a key role in the revitalization of The Walt Disney Company and Disney’s animation legacy. He was associated with the Company over a 56-year period, and from 1984 – 2003, served as vice chairman of the Company’s board of directors, and chairman of the Studio’s Animation Department. In recent years, he held the title of director emeritus and consultant for the Company.

As head of Disney Animation, Disney helped to guide the Studio to a new golden age of animation with an unprecedented string of artistic and box office successes that included “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” and “The Lion King.” He personally executive produced “Fantasia/2000,” a sequel to the 1940 Disney classic, and served in a similar capacity on a number of recent animated shorts, including the 2004 Oscar®-nominated “Destino,” based on storyboards and original art by the iconic artist Salvador Dali. In the area of live-action films, Disney and his wife, Leslie DeMeuse Disney, most recently executive produced the 2008 feature documentary, “Morning Light,” which followed a group of young sailors as they competed in the grueling Transpac race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

His philanthropic activities included sponsorship of the Roy E. Disney Center for the Performing Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, part of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, is scheduled to open in spring, 2010.

Commenting on the announcement, Bob Iger, president and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said, “On behalf of everyone at Disney, we are saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague Roy E. Disney. He was much more than a valued 56-year Company veteran – Roy’s true passion and focus were preserving and building upon the amazing legacy of Disney animation that was started by his father and uncle. Roy’s commitment to the art of animation was unparalleled and will always remain his personal legacy and one of his greatest contributions to Disney’s past, present and future.”

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, added, “I first met Roy when I was still an animation student at CalArts. Not only did I consider him a personal friend, but he was a great man who believed deeply in the art of animation. He put his heart and soul into preserving Disney’s legendary past, while helping to move the art of animation into the modern age by embracing new technology. Roy was a visionary and passionate supporter of the art form, and he was all about quality. I was always impressed that he would make time for someone like me when I was fresh out of college, and he continued to support and encourage me throughout my career.”

Stanley Gold, president, Shamrock Holdings, said, “Roy and I enjoyed a 35-year friendship and partnership that was simply special. We faced many business challenges together, had fun in the process, and enjoyed a wide variety of professional successes. Roy was a man who was steadfastly loyal to his principles and to his friends. He was a gracious, humble gentleman who could make the tough decisions life sometimes requires. He carried the torch high and proud, and the world is a better place for his tireless efforts. I will miss him greatly.

Roy Edward Disney was born in Los Angeles on January 10, 1930 to Roy O. Disney and Edna Francis Disney. His father and his uncle, Walt Disney, co-founded the Disney entertainment business in 1923.

After attending Harvard School and Pomona College, Disney launched his entertainment industry career in 1952, working as an assistant film editor on the “Dragnet” TV series.

He joined The Walt Disney Studios in 1953 as an assistant film editor, where his credits included the landmark Academy Award®-winning True-Life Adventures features, “The Living Desert” and “The Vanishing Prairie.” As a writer and production associate, he received Oscar® nominations for his work on the short subject, “Mysteries of the Deep” in 1959, and in 2003 for his work as executive producer for “Destino.”

Disney produced and directed some 35 other TV and theatrical production, including the landmark 1968 documentary, “Varda, the Peregrine Falcon,” before leaving in 1977 to become an independent producer and investor.

In 1978, Disney founded Shamrock Holdings, Inc., a wholly-owned family enterprise headquartered in Burbank, California, which specializes in private equity, real estate, and public equities investing. He served as chairman of the company, which has approximately $1.5 billion of capital committed to funds.

An avid competitive sailor, Disney holds several elapsed-time records for offshore races in the Pacific Ocean, including multiple wins in the 2,225-mile Transpac.

Among his many professional and philanthropic activities, Disney served on the board of trustees of California Institute of the Arts, the advisory board of St. Joseph Medical Center, and the board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, Inc. Additionally, he was an advisory member of the board of directors of the United States Committee for UNICEF, chairman emeritus of the board of directors of the Peregrine Fund, a member of the board of trustees of Ronald McDonald House charities, and a member of the board of trustees of the American Ireland Fund.

In 1993, he received the Winsor McCay Award (a special “Annie Award”) from ASIFA-Hollywood (The International Animated Film Society). The McCay Award is for lifetime achievement in animation. In 1997, Disney was awarded the first “Mort Walker Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Cartoon Industry,” by the Boca Raton International Museum of Cartoon Art.

Disney received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from his alma mater Pomona College in 1998. In 2002, he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Mercy College in New York. The following year, he was presented with the Trustees’ Award and honorary Doctor of the Arts degree from CalArts.

Among his other honors, Disney was named a recipient of the 1999 National Catholic Education Association Elizabeth Ann Seton Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to children and education. In April 1999, Disney received the Henry Bergh Humane Award from the ASPCA, and in spring 2000, he was awarded the Inaugural Environmental Leadership Award from the Audubon Society.

Disney is survived by his wife, Leslie, and four children from his marriage to Patricia Dailey Disney – Tim Disney, Roy Patrick Disney, Abigail Disney, and Susan Disney Lord. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private, followed by cremation. His ashes will be scattered at sea. Plans for a Life Celebration will be announced shortly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California.

How were you introduce to 'Themagical' website?

Hey Everybody!

Reighard here to want to ask you guys (& gals too ) a question. "How were you introduce to "Themagical" website?"

I want to hear your stories how you found us online and what was your expressions when you played our simulations.

I was wondering how you all found us online and hear how this site made an impact to you while you were on our site.

It's kinda neat to hear the stories of how we found 'Themagical' and the impact it has made on us.

Here's a great story: Carteerio from themagical.nl SDT Research Team

Q1.) How did you hear about themagical.nl site?

A.) Well... it's a funny story. it was early December of 2007 when I was waiting around the airport with my mom's coworker who was on the computer at the time..

he and I hung out for a little bit in the baggage office (as he worked for the airlines) and he showed me the Tower of Terror simulation.

Right when he showed I was very very excited to see a Disney sim that was just so.. awesome.
A little bit later on (about a day) I soon discovered to other three simulations (as there were only four at the time) and was completely amazed.

After finding all four, I soon joined the great community of themagical.nl to get a bit more attached to these sims. ... finding out that the next one would be so far away... four months.

Hier is een mooi verhaal: Carteerio van themagical.nl SDT Research Team

Exclusive Intereview: Martijn Leseman! :D

Hello ALL!

I hope you are had a great thanksgiving (in the states) and as well black friday shopping for those who manage to make it safe from the stores and back to your house.

Have I got a treat for you! This is over due and I think its the perfect time to do this too!

Let me lay the foundation for this article, first this is an over due interview that was in the works but never had time to do it since our life schedules and work schedule had us both hands tied up for the longest time. So when finally I got the time and he did as well, I was able to ask him if he would like to do a special interview for our readers and visitors who are reading this blog.

I was blessed to get a chance to see him in person in the Netherlands back in October 2008. We talked coasters, theme parks, roller coasters, drank cappuccino (x2 for us) and as well talked 'Themagical' stuff and the future of 'Themagical'.

(Martijn ^^ & me ^^ (Reighard)

As the picture you can see above (Martijn on the left and me (Reighard) on the right) ), this was the picture I took of us when I was there and boy, we both had a great time. :D

Well last night, we were able to talk via msn messenger and I had the pleasure to have an exclusive interview with my pal and buddy Martijn who is the webmaster/ simulator creator of the simulations that you see on 'Themagical's' website.

NOW! On with the interview! :D

"Themagical Special Interview: Martijn Leseman"

Q) Now, since we are coming close to the birthday of Themagical (December 1), have you ever imagined that your site will be making this far online?

A) No, really did not, surprises me a little bit. Thought that the Sims never is popular, but it turned out to be a great spot for simulation lovers. I saw similar simulations at other websites, really got my attention, as I always want to know how an attraction works and just wondered how it would be to control them by myself.

Q) From that, where did the name "Themagical" came from?

A) Hmm, I first had a similar name themagical-online before I registered this domain. I think it came from the idea of creating a "magical" website, a Disney magic. Just added some combinations and voila: Themagical.nl registered the domain at December 1st 2000.

At that time it was not possible to register an .nl domain, without being Dutch Company. But a company had the possibility for normal people to do so. After 3 years I bought the domain officially and registered it at my own name at the time the law changed in the Netherlands.

Q) Tell me about the process about creating your first simulation; Tower Of Terror was your first simulation correct? What made you decide to create that simulation than any other E-Ticket Attraction?

A) My first simulation was the Space Mountain Simulation. It all started with watching the "Shot for the Moon" documentary playing at the TV station in the Netherlands, around the time Space Mountain opened in Disneyland Paris.

I had my first computer and started to experiment with Flash, as other Sims I saw at the internet, a lot used flash. So tried to find all information I could, at the internet, about the new SM and draw my first lines for the sim really took a lot of time, because the first project is always difficult.

Q) How long took you to create your simulations?

A) Sm (Space Mountain) took me about 1.5 year. BTM (Big Thunder Mountain), the 2nd one shorter already knew how to start a simulation at that time. Released the BTM sim in 2005, a lot of time is used for preparation, like getting all stuff which is related to the attraction: pictures/audio, documents, and blueprints. SM and the BTM sim are built on handmade drawings, (btw the MPI ‘Millionaire Play It’ sim too).

Q) From the time 2001 through 2006 showed big traffic to your website and notice that it grew as well your staff. We we’re introduce to Millionaire Play It (MPI) the following year in March 2007. What made you to decide Millionaire Play It as your next "5th" simulation to the website?

A) I met a guy named Randy, also a big enthusiast with simulation. We got in touch, and started to work together at the project. I did not have a project running at the time, and wanted to stop creating Sims. But he managed to get me working again and 2 new simulations followed. MPI is a comprehensive project as the show is difficult to simulate, but we managed to finish the sim and it worked. A great new addition to the website, already 5 simulations.

EE (Expedition Everest) follow in 2008 with a lot of new techniques used for the sim. Better action scripting, more options, improved performance and the introduction of flash 10 plugin.

Q) You said that you weren't going to expand the simulations. WOW! So what made you to continue, it sounded like you were done making any more simulations!?

A) Building the Sims is a time consuming development and my life changed.

So I had to spend more time at other things in life. I’m married and had (still have) a full-time job. So my personal life asked a lot of time, and I had to leave the website. But with the MPI simulation, the idea of working at a development team, just got me to work again as we could share the development and creation of the huge amount of props build for the sim.

Q) Randy, as you mentioned came to help you work on your website. How did you get in contact with him? And what does he do to help you on your website?

A) My specialty is scripting, and Randy had the great visual views. We met by an email send by randy. After some posts at the forum, he asked me, if he could join the Dev Team. We mailed a lot and I decided I needed someone at the Team, with the same "drive" for the Sims, with the same view about making a good simulation work. We both love the Disney theme parks, and also visited them, so had a lot of ideas.

I remember that I build the first 2 Sims without having visited the attractions before. So we started to work together. Sometimes difficult, because the difference in time. I'm living at the Netherlands, and Randy in the US. So a 6 hour difference. But I managed to keep each other up-to-date by using email

And send daily/weekly updates. Of course, by discussing hours by msn;

One advantage, I sometimes work a nightshift, so we had more time, and then normally would have, with a 6 hour time difference. The last 2 Sims are a US-Eu co-operation. He also currently “Working at the introduction of a refurbished BTM simulation for the TSA (Themagical Simulation Academy) pages”.

Q) What do you see for the future of themagical? Any new plans for themagical?

A) Yeah, thinking about a new simulation, and working at a co-project for another friend-website. But first I will finish the transfer of the simulation to the TSA website, so that all 6 Sims can save scores. So Tm will have a separate Sims section and a forum section.

Q) What's this TSA? What does it stand for?

A) Ok, TSA means Themagical Simulation Academy. First wanted to give the new section this name, but I found out that Disney already used a similar name for a website section. Still using the name for the project, but trying to find a new name for the future still in progress. The idea was to build a place where you could be virtually educated as Cast member.

Q) Did I hear about new simulations in the works??! Is there a way of a sneak peak of these new simulations?

A) No sneak peak, still choosing which project it is going to be.

My fav’s are Indiana jones and Splash Mountain. Both classic rides, especially the last one.

Q) Do you have any comments to our viewers of the website that you would like to say?

A) I really hope everybody loves to play the simulations as much as I still do, and I am glad I am

not the only one who loves them. Thanks for all the support!

Happy Thanksgiving

Hey Everyone!

We are within about a week before here in the "States" have the national holiday of Thanksgiving!

Ah...the second best time of the year to come together with family and friends over a delicious hot juicy turkey and all the fixings. I know this is my favorite time of holiday to enjoy delicious food and fellowship.

Even getting together for a meal is wonderful to enjoy and celebrate as one. Where ever you are at right now, think of things that you are thankful for this year. It's great to reflect on these things and as well to find ways to help others in need. Maybe even volunteering at a local soup kitchen to feed the homeless this holiday season and many other ways to help families who are in need of help to provide a hot meal this holiday and as well daily life.

As the following day after thanksgiving, is a season where everbody goes shopping like a mad crazy person. This is known where stores around the nation sells items for real less prices and as well make great deals for certain hours of the day! This is called "Black Friday".

Black friday is a term where the day after thanksgiving, people will go to the stores very early early in the morning around 1am or so to buy items that are hot ticket items. Local stores like Best Buy, Walmart, Sears, etc... will sell certain products the night of black friday, people who stand for hours before the store close, just to be the first one to get hands on a hot selling product. People usually shop for christmas deals already and finding prices that they can afford since we are all still in the economy is weak. So hopefully, more revenue will help stores and as well the people who work there make a decent pay check this season.

For all of those who are visiting us here and as well who are members from the "States", the staff of 'Themagical' team wishes you and your families to have a safe and enjoyable thanksgiving day!

Until then!

School in session!

Hey all!

I trust you had a great summer 'staycation' (instead of vacation due to the ressions economy) this year and as well having fun with our current simulations.

By now, most of you have went back to school and have homework and possibly mid-terms by now! But don't worry, in your free time you can have fun and talk to our commuity or us when your done with your school work of course! ;)

It's October here in the states and I bet most of you guys (and gals) are getting ready for the festives of halloween events. I know by working at my job, halloween is huge thing and as well a big event in my area. I know alot of you are getting excited by it too!

The fall leaves blooming, the autium air of the cool crispness, and enjoying fall treats like pumpkin pie, candy and hot apple cider! This is the best time to enjoy the fall season at its fullest. (BRING ON THE CANDY!! heheh lol) :D

For those who aren't into halloween, there's always alternatives to enjoy the halloween event without all the ghosts and scary stuff that goes along with halloween.

Whatever you do, have a great October season! :)

Developer FAQ---------------Frequently Asked Questions
When will Adobe Flash Platform tooling support building applications for iPhone?

A public beta of Flash Professional CS5 including support for building applications for iPhone is planned for later this year. Sign up to be notified when the beta is available.

How does the Flash Platform tooling update help developers?

The tooling update allows developers to use Flash technologies to develop content for iPhone and iPod touch, devices that were previously closed to them. Developers can write new code or reuse existing web content to build applications for iPhone. Because the source code and assets are reusable across the Flash Platform runtimes,—Adobe AIR and Flash Player—it also gives developers a way to more easily target other mobile and desktop environments.

How is this different from Adobe Flash Player 10 coming to iPhone? Will iPhone users be able to view web content built with Flash technology in the iPhone browser?

The new support for iPhone applications in the Flash Platform tooling will not allow iPhone users to browse web content built with Flash technology on iPhone, but it may allow developers to repackage existing web content as applications for iPhone if they choose to do so.

Flash Player uses a just-in-time compiler and virtual machine within a browser plug-in to play back content on websites. Those technologies are not allowed on the iPhone at this time, so a Flash Player for iPhone is not being made available today.

Flash Professional CS5 will enable developers to build applications for iPhone that are installed as native applications. Users will be able to access the apps after downloading them from Apple’s App Store and installing them on iPhone or iPod touch.

Can applications for iPhone built with Flash Platform tooling be delivered through Apple’s App Store?

Yes. Developers can deliver applications built with Flash Platform tooling just like any other iPhone application. This will require the developer to be a member of the iPhone Developer Program and follow the program guidelines.

Do developers need to participate in Apple’s iPhone Developer Program in order to develop or deploy applications for iPhone using the Flash Platform tools?

Yes. A developer certificate from Apple is required in order to test and deploy applications to iPhone. Apple provides information on its developer programs at http://developer.apple.com/iphone/.

Are applications for iPhone built with Flash Platform tools interpreted at runtime?

No. iPhone applications built with Flash Platform tools are compiled into standard, native iPhone executables, just like any other iPhone application.

Can applications load SWF files or other code at runtime, such as a module from a website?

No. iPhone applications built with Flash Platform tools are compiled into standard, native iPhone executable packages and there is no runtime interpreter that could be used to run ActionScript bytecode within the application.

Which version of the iPhone SDK/operating system is supported by the applications?

Applications can be built targeting iPhone OS 3.0 and later. Will applications built with Flash Platform tools work on iPod touch? iPhone 1.0? iPhone 3G? iPhone 3GS?Applications should work on all iPhone and iPod touch devices. However, as the hardware specifications of the devices are widely divergent, content performance may vary between devices and device generations.

* Delivery through the App Store requires participation in the iPhone Developer Program and approval of the application by Apple.

We have completely redo the site to a more book theme. We are still making changes to have that touch we are looking for. The feel of the site and as well easy to navigate around the site.

You can visit the flash site at : http://sims.themagical.nl/ **Be sure you have the lastest Adobe Flash Player version to view the site. (*Version 10 is required and recommended to use).

Sorry for not updating this for while. It's been a busy summer for me and several situations happened to me during this summer. Let's just say my body is really going through a tough time this summer! :O ! 0_o!?

More updates shall be coming soon! Enjoy the rest of your summer break!
